Welcome to the Lake!

Upon Arrival

Execute this checklist:
  • In the utility room, gently open the valve marked MAIN. This turns on the water supply to the unit. (The open position is parallel to the pipe; closed is perpendicular to the pipe.)
  • In the utility room, turn the circuit breaker for the hot water heater on.
  • Turn the icemaker on. In the freezer, remove the plastic shelf over the ice drawer, press the switch to the ON position, which is towards the “1”. (It flips back to the middle. That is normal.) Replace the plastic shelf.
  • Hang the parking permits in your vehicles. They're kept on the coat hooks in the entryway. If you don't display it when it's required, they will tow your car. (If you're lucky, they may warn you by putting a giant, hard-to-peel-off sticker on your driver's side window.) The rulebook says, “Restricted parking is in effect beginning at Noon Friday through Noon Sunday (or Monday on a holiday weekend) from Memorial Day through Labor Day. During these times, parking permits are required to be displayed on the rear-view mirror for vehicles parked on the first and second tier parking areas as well as the designated area on the third tier in front of buildings A, B, and C.”

TV & Stereo

All video media comes from the Apple TV. There is no disc player and no traditional cable box. The sound for the TV comes from the stereo and is heard through the wall-mounted speakers, never the TV itself. To watch TV, begin by turning on the stereo RECEIVER and the TV with the Onkyo remote. Press the buttons indicated:

Then, turn the Apple TV on by pressing anything on the Apple TV remote. It may take a minute to initialize. The stereo is set to provide sound for the TV when BD/DVD appears on the stereo. If something else is showing, press the indicated BD/DVD button on the Onkyo remote:

Select what you watch using the Apple TV remote or the Onkyo remote. Use the Spectrum app to watch cable TV channels and local channels. The Apple TV also has apps for Netflix, Paramount+, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, etc. The volume can be controlled from the Apple TV remote or the indicated buttons on the Onkyo remote:

You can listen to music from your phone (Spotify, Apple Music, MP3s, etc.) through the stereo by pairing your phone with the stereo over Bluetooth. Simply select Bluetooth on the Onkyo remote:

Then, pair your phone with the “Onkyo TX-NR535” device.

Troubleshooting:

It can take some time for the Apple TV to come up on the TV screen. If it never does, perhaps someone messed with the TV’s input source. It should be set to HDMI-3.

Please do not attempt to listen to anything “just through the TV”. Please don’t rewire or reconfigure the TV or stereo. Instead, if you have problems or questions, call or text.

WiFi

Join either of the WiFi networks:
  • Go Cubs! 5
This one is faster. Depending on your device, you may not see this one.
  • Go Cubs! 2.4
This one reaches further and is more reliable through walls.
Please call or text for the password.

Kitchen

Please hand wash:

  • Anything that is or has plastic, like utensils, Cuisinart components, etc.
  • Anything that is or has wood, like steak knives, cutting boards, etc.

Please make an effort to put dishes, pots, pans, etc. away in the place you found them.

The narrow blue funnel on the bar cart is for filling Soda-Stream bottles with filtered water from the refrigerator. Please don't use it for other liquids or—god forbid—motor oil.

The kitchen knife with the black blade is ceramic. It will shatter if dropped. Attempting to sharpen it like a regular knife will ruin it.

Placemats, kitchen towels, dishrags, and hot pads can be found in the cabinet above the microwave.

Garbage bags, dishwasher tablets, and other kitchen cleaning supplies are found under the sink.

Dumpsters are on the third parking level. We get fined if garbage is kept right outside the unit.

Utility Room

Please leave the door open as much as possible. It helps the air conditioner operate at peak performance.

Spare paper products and cleaning supplies can be found in here.

Please keep the washing machine door propped open to prevent mold and mildew.

The dryer takes a long time to run. The 60 minute setting is recommended. Please clean the dryer's lint trap before/after every load.

Balcony

Hanging towels or swimwear over the railing isn't allowed. Open flames (like candles or citronella pots) aren't allowed. We'll get fined if you do that stuff.

Furniture covers can be stored in the box on the deck. There are cushions for the deck chairs in the box.

Bathrooms

Bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths are under the sink. As they get washed, please return them to the bathroom from where they came.

Extra toilet paper and hand soap is under the sink. Additional supply is in the utility room.

Beach towels are stacked in the closet in the primary bedroom.

Bedrooms

There are wall switches for the lights and the fans. It's only necessary to use the chain to adjust the fan speed.

There is at least one USB outlet near the bed in each bedroom.

The beds should each have fresh sheets.

Please remove the pillow shams if you're going to use the pillows.

The primary bedroom has a switch to control the lamps.

Security Cameras

The cameras are there to check up on the building management staff and their contractors, and people going onto dock 5. Please don't unplug, move, cover, or otherwise tamper with the cameras.

Supplies

Feel free to use the cleaning supplies, paper products, and condiments. If something runs out and you buy more, please replace it with the same brand. (For example, Bounty paper towels, Quilted Northern toilet paper, Puffs Ultrasoft facial tissue, Gain laundry detergent, Clorox Disinfectent Wipes, Clorox Bathroom Cleaner, Windex, Dawn Powershot, Heinz ketchup, Glad trash bags, etc.)

If you bring or buy other brands, please take them home with you.

Cleaning Checklist

We developed this for ourselves so that we wouldn't forget anything when getting the condo ready for you. Please be courteous to the people who follow you.

Bedrooms

  • There are two sets of sheets for every bed in the condo. Each spare set is kept in the closet on shelf of the bedroom in which it belongs. All sheets have labeled tags indicating what size bed they belong on, and therefore what bedroom they belong in. K is for king in the primary bedroom. Q is for queen in the front bedroom. T is for the twin-sized bunk beds and F is for the full-size bed, both in the kids' room.

During your stay, please wash any sheets and towels left in the laundry by the previous visitors. You'll have built up some good karma in case you leave some items unlaundered.

  • Put clean sheets on the beds you used.
  • Put dirty sheets in the laundry.
  • Empty the trash can.
  • Vacuum the carpet.
  • Dust the fan blades.
  • Take your personal belongings with you. Check the drawers and under the bed.

Entry & Hall

  • Sweep and mop.

Bathrooms

  • As with the bedding, please wash anything that was left by the previous party. Leave any still-dirty towels and bath mats in the laundry when you leave.
  • Clean the mirror, sink, vanity counter, shower, and toilet, including under the lid and seat.
  • Sweep and mop.
  • Empty the trash can and put in a fresh bag.
  • Provide a clean hand towel on the towel rod and a clean bath mat on the floor.
  • Restock a spare roll of toilet paper under the sink.

Kitchen

  • Return dishes, flatware, stemware, barware, pots, pans, utensils, and baking equipment where you found them.
  • Put dirty towels in the laundry room.
  • Clean all counter tops, the sink, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and stove.
  • Take out the trash and put in a fresh garbage bag.
  • Sweep and mop.
  • Please do not leave dirty dishes in the dishwasher and don't leave it running when you leave.
  • Physically close the valve to the kitchen faucet. Don't just use the touch feature to turn it off.

Dining/Living Room

  • Vacuum the carpet and the mat by the sliding door.
  • Sweep and mop the hardwood floors, including under the table and under all the chairs, including the bar chairs.
  • Make sure the dining table, coffee table, and the credenza under the TV are wiped down and dry.
  • Check between the couch cushions for personal items.
  • Make sure the TV and stereo are off.
  • Dust the fan blades.
  • Please put the ceiling fan remote back in its hanger. Please put the stereo/TV remotes together where we'll find them.

Balcony

  • Sweep the deck.
  • Clean and cover the table. Tuck the cover under the table legs.
  • Stack the chairs against the building wall and cover them. Tuck the cover under the chair legs.

Upon Departure

Execute this checklist:
  • Turn off all the lights and all the fans. There is no need to adjust the thermostat.
  • In winter months, open the cabinet doors under all four sinks.
  • Turn off the ice maker. In the freezer, remove the plastic shelf over the ice drawer, press the switch to the OFF position, which is towards the “0”. (It flips back to the middle. That is normal.) Replace the plastic shelf.
  • In the utility room, close the valve marked MAIN. This turns off the water supply, a procedure required by the association. (The open position is parallel to the pipe; closed is perpendicular to the pipe.) Don't do this until the dishwasher and washing machine cycles have completed and you've flushed the toilets for the final time.
  • In the utility room, turn the circuit breaker for the hot water heater off.
  • Close all the blinds and curtains to block out as much sunlight as possible.
  • Take all perishable food with you, unless you've checked with the people coming after you and they specifically want the items you're leaving. Don't assume.
  • Take home all beverages you brought or bought, whether alcohol or not, including all bottled water.
  • Leave the parking permits hanging on the coat hooks by the entry!
  • Lock the door.
